Community Engagement

On-the-Ground Work

LAUP is on the ground, mobilizing and empowering communities. We’re working shoulder-to-shoulder with parents, caregivers, residents, organizations, businesses, and government institutions  to build and implement strategies that create the strongest community for young children and their families.

One of the ways LAUP is giving life to this mission is through partnering with two of 14 First 5 LA Best Start communities–Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) and Northeast Valley (NEV).

We offer comprehensive trainings for stakeholders and community based organizations that empower residents and beyond to advocate for high quality services and resources. Topics include:

  • Advocacy
  • Parent Resiliency
  • Cultural Diversity and many others aimed at strengthening families

LAUP’s Parent Ambassador Program

The LAUP Parent Ambassador Program empowers parents with the necessary knowledge and tools to advocate on behalf of their children and communities. Through hands-on workshops and trainings, more than 3,000 parents have learned how to draft persuasive letters and petitions, hold meetings with elected officials, use social media to convey advocacy messages, and organize community members, in order to advance and enhance the early learning opportunities for our children. Joined by our Public Affairs staff, every year LAUP Parent Ambassadors lead the charge to the state and federal capitols to meet with legislative offices and share the powerful journey and impact early learning has had on the lives of their child(ren) and family unit. Parents and families are a child’s first and foremost, greatest advocate, and we’re proud to be the first mover with this program.

We are very interested in the resources and trainings that LAUP provides. I really like that there are not just workshops, but that (LAUP) follows up with activities, things that are practical.
