LAUPlifting, April 2017 – CEO Message

Having grown-up in the Midwest, I was accustomed to living out the annual ritual of the proverb “April showers bring May flowers.” While the rain we’ve been experiencing in Southern California has made me feel quite at home, I know that it is a rare phenomenon for most Californians. But being a proverb kind of guy, I like to think of this recent spate of rain as symbolic of the hard work that LAUP continues to perform that nourishes the ECE world and brings growth and opportunity to so many young children and their families. And just like my Midwest rains were symbolic of the newness of spring, LAUP has recently been blessed with new opportunities to grow our impact.

For the first time ever, LAUP has been awarded a Federal Grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership grant will provide high-quality early learning and care to over 100 children within high-need zip codes and Promise Zone neighborhoods in Los Angeles County through August of 2021. We look forward to this expanded opportunity to support the education and care of our youngest and most vulnerable children.

We all know that learning starts in the months before a child is even born. The years between birth and age five represent a critical window during which the architecture of the brain is developed, and it is during this window that every experience lays the foundation for a child’s learning, growth, and opportunities in life. So during this season, it is significant that we have a special week in April dedicated to celebrating our youngest learners, their teachers, and their families. The Week of the Young Child builds a bridge between members of the ECE community, and empowers us to join together with one voice to lift up the importance of high-quality early learning experiences. The Week of the Young Child runs from April 24 – April 28. You can follow us online for special tips, ideas, and words of encouragement to support you on your child-rearing journey. We hope you will engage with our online community – whether through Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter – using the hashtag #WOYC17. We look forward to celebrating this week with you!

I am so grateful for this wonderful season of growth that is bearing great fruit here at LAUP. Symbolically we hope to share a seat on the porch swing, appreciate the flowers we have nourished, and find inspiration and hope as we continue to cultivate our vast early learning garden together.
